The guys over at IGN UK got to spend some time with Sony’s up-and-coming PlayStation 3, and have the pictures to prove it. Along with some horrible office decor and lots of UK-slang, the guys managed to capture some good first impressions. It doesn’t seem like this was an unauthorized hands-on with a dev unit (a Sony rep was apparently present). The PS3 appears in all its shiny glory, with the new SIXAXIS controller in tow. The SIXAXIS is actually the main sticking point of IGN’s first impressions of the PS3. In their own words:
Personally, we can’t help but feel that the SIXAXIS (as it’s now known) has been sadly neglected when viewed alongside the rest of the PS3. Compared to Microsoft’s uber-comfortable Xbox 360 pad, the SIXAXIS feels cheap, plasticky, uncomfortable and disconcertingly light - almost as if it’s going to fly out of your hands during those more extreme gaming moments… It’s just a shame that Sony hasn’t used its resources to bring its controller up to next-gen standards along with its cutting-edge hardware.
That’s not to say the guys didn’t enjoy themselves. Much was made about the overall feel of the system, including the buttons on the housing, the disc bay, the system’s menu system, and the ability to find out how many minutes of play are left on your controller’s battery. Make sure to check out IGN’s article yourself for pictures and other impressions.
