First PS3 Commercial hits airwaves

With just over a month to go until launch, Sony has begun television advertising for it's next gen console, the PS3, in North America. You have seen the billboards and posters, and, today, we will show you the first PS3 TV commercial.

The commercial itself is similar to Microsoft's commercials for the Xbox 360, there is very little to do with the system itself. Actually there is nothing about the system, and unless you watch the entire clip, you won't know it's about the PS3 at all.

The clip depicts a young boy waking up and getting ready. You first assume he is preparing for school, but once he is dressed up and has his backpack ready, he gets on the roof of his house instead of taking off for school. Once he is up top, he sees several other boys, all with backpacks, all on top of roofs. Then it goes to a black screen, with 11/17/06 on it, then that fades away to "The wait is over." Then finally, at the VERY end of the commercial, you get your first proof that this is a PS3 commercial, with the words "PlayStation 3."

To be honest, it seems a bit late for Sony to begin it's TV campaign, seeing as preorders are sold out and such, but maybe they are doing this for those of us who got up early to preorder our system. To ease our minds and let us know that we made a good decision, and that they are on top of things. Or maybe they are going for the millions who didn't get a preorder, sparking the emotions to get them pumped for launch.

The PS3's 3.2 GHz Cell processor, developed jointly by Sony, Toshiba and IBM ("SIT"), is an implementation to dynamically assign physical processor cores to do different types of work independantly. It has a PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and six accessible 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs), a seventh runs in a special mode and is dedicated to OS security, and an eighth disabled to improve production yields. The PPE, SPE's and other elements ("units") are connected via an Element Interconnect Bus which serves to connect all of the units in a ring-style bus. The PPE has a 512KB level 2 cache and one VMX vector unit. Each of the SPEs is a RISC processor with 128 128-bit SIMD GPRs and superscalar functions. Each SPE contains 256KB of non-cached memory (local storage, "LS") that is shared by program code and work data. SPEs may access more data in the main memory using DMA. The floating point performance of the whole system (CPU + GPU) is reported to be 2.18 TFLOPS[38]. PlayStation 3's Cell CPU achieves 218 GFLOPS single precision float and is reported at around 26 GFLOPS double precision. The PS3 will ship with 256 MB of Rambus XDR DRAM, clocked at CPU die speed.
